nouvelles machines, & de plusieurs planches. Lyon, David

Forey, 1733, gr. in-4°, XXIV y compris le titre en rouge

et noir + 152 p. + 8 p. + 88 (sur 93) planches de gures,

taché d’eau principalement dans la marge supérieure, un

peu bruni, reliure récente dans le style de l’époque, dos à

L’auteur, comte de Servières fut lieutenant colonel dans l’armée

française, l’un des vingt-cinq de l’Académie des Sciences et des

Belles-Lettres de Lyon, directeur de la Société des Beaux-Arts.

quibus annexa est Solutio problematis quatuor corporum

in-4to, XVIII + 332 p., foxed, library stamp on endpaper

scratched out, half leather binding on raised bands, title

label on spine, gold tooling faded, top of spine chipped.

First edition of a most important work in astronomy. It became

the basis of extensive tables of lunar motion. “Hansen’s contri-

butions to astronomy were so numerous and enriched so many

branches of that eld that he was considered among the formost

astronomers of his time. ... His rst major work was an extensive

study of the mutual pertubations of Jupiter and Saturn ... Several

of his important papers were devoted to the theory of the motion

of comets or minor planets, but his main work was concerned

with the motion of the moon (1838). The latter work became the

basis of extensive tables of lunar motion, published in 1857 ...

These tables proved to be so accurate that (as George Biddell airy

put it) “probably in no recorded instance has practical science

ever advanced so far by a single stride” (DSB). “He may now

fairly be considered the greatest master of celestial mechan-

The correspondence of three of the greatest 17th century

scientists. Some of these letters were very inuencial to the

development of certain aspects of mathematics. It is the rst

publication of Huygens’ correspondence with Leibniz and

L’Hopital translated from the Latin language into French and

published by Petrus Joannes Uylenbroek. He was professor

at the Dutch Academy of Physics and Astronomy in Leiden.

This rst part of this volume contains 56 letters between Leib-

niz (34) and Huygens (22) (LVI and not altogether LXXVI

letters; printing error starting after letter number XLI: LXII-

LXXVI), written between 1674 and 1694. The 2nd part (ff.

215ff.) contains 35 letters between the marquis Guillaume F.A.

de L’Hopital (19) and Huygens (16), written between 1690
